Full dayRainbow Mountain Tour
Vinicunca above 5,000 m, with the Red Valley as an optional way down.
The colored mountain with a jagged ridge, a lake below it and almost nobody on the trail.
The Pallay Punchu hike leads to one of the newest colored mountains around Cusco to open to visitors, and still one of the emptiest. It lies 190 km south of the city above the Langui Layo lake. Bands of iron oxide, copper and quartz run across its sharp ridge in a pattern that looks like a handwoven Andean poncho, which is where the Quechua name comes from.
If you have seen the photos of crowded Vinicunca and want the color without the crowd, this is the day to book.
Pickup at your hotel in Cusco and departure south.
Breakfast in Sicuani, on the way to the province of Canas.
Drive from Sicuani to Layo along the shore of the Langui Layo lake.
Arrival at the trailhead and safety talk with your guide.
Guided climb to the Pallay Punchu viewpoints.
Free time on the ridge for photos and the view of the lake.
Buffet lunch after the walk down.
Return to Cusco, with an optional stop at Raqchi.
Vinicunca receives thousands of people a day. Here it is normal to see only one or two other vehicles.
Pallay is the Andean art of weaving geometric designs and punchu means poncho. The stripes of the mountain repeat that pattern.
From the main ridge the still water of the lake contrasts with the reds and ochres of the rock.
The minerals differ from those of Vinicunca, so the tones and shapes here are found nowhere else in Cusco.
On the way back you can visit the Temple of Wiracocha, one of the best preserved Inca sites of the region.
The road crosses towns and communities of Canas that rarely appear on any tourist route.
From our guidesBe aware that Pallay Punchu is by far the most distant of the colored mountains, almost twice as far as Vinicunca or Palccoyo. The day on the road is longer. In return you walk the trail nearly alone.
We come by your hotel in Cusco to begin the longest drive of all our day hikes. You can sleep a little more as the city lights fall behind.
A solid breakfast is served in Sicuani before we continue south.
The road heads for the district of Layo. The country opens out and the Langui Layo lake comes into view between the hills.
From the trailhead your guide leads you up a moderately steep path past several viewpoints. Each one shows the colored bands from a new angle.
At the top you have free time to photograph the rock up close and to look out over the lake stretching into the distance.
Back in town we have a relaxed buffet lunch of local dishes. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options are available on request.
Those who wish can stop at Raqchi to see the Temple of Wiracocha. We reach Cusco between about 5:00 and 5:30 p.m.

Cash in solesPallay Punchu is farther away than any of our other day hikes, so you leave earlier and get back later. The top of the trail is at about 4,700 m (15,420 ft). Spend 1 or 2 nights in Cusco first to acclimatize.
Mornings on the route are cold, around 0°C (32°F), and the midday sun at this height is fierce. Wear layers, bring sunscreen and lip balm and drink water often.
Compared with Rainbow Mountain or Palccoyo, this hike means more hours in the van. What you get for it is the colored mountain where you are most likely to be almost alone, plus the Langui Layo lake and, if you like, the Raqchi ruins on the same day.
If a short drive matters most to you and crowds are not a problem, Palccoyo or Vinicunca remain the practical choice. If you want the quietest experience in Cusco, pick this one. General travel information is on Peru Travel, the official tourism portal.
In Quechua, pallay is the craft of weaving geometric patterns and punchu means poncho. The name describes the stripes of the mountain, which look like the design of a handwoven poncho.
No. They are three separate colored mountains, each with its own mineral pattern. Pallay Punchu is farther from Cusco (190 km) and receives far fewer visitors than the other two.
Mostly because of the distance. The drive is nearly double that of Vinicunca or Palccoyo, so most agencies and travelers still choose the closer options.
About 4 to 5 km round trip with 1 to 1.5 hours of walking. The highest point is around 4,700 m (15,420 ft).
Yes. Horses are available at the trailhead for about 140 soles, paid in cash to the owners.
The stop is optional and the entry, about 20 soles, is paid separately by those who want to go in.
Between about 5:00 and 5:30 p.m., a little later if the group visits Raqchi.
